Eurasian Golden Oriole

Oriolus oriolus

Eurasian Golden Oriole

Overview

The Eurasian Golden Oriole is the golden jewel of Delta forests. Although brightly coloured, it is hard to see as it remains hidden in the dense canopy of tall trees.

Physical Characteristics

Male is brilliant golden-yellow with black wings and tail. Female is more subdued, greenish-yellow, aiding camouflage at the nest.

Habitat & Distribution

Prefers poplar and willow gallery woodland and ridge forests. A migrant that arrives late, when foliage is fully developed.

Behaviour & Diet

A major consumer of hairy caterpillars, very beneficial to woodland. Its song is a melodic whistle, "fi-lo-li-lo", heralding hot summer days.

Conservation Status

LC. The Danube Delta provides optimal habitats for this species, which avoids areas of intensive agriculture and pesticides.
