Traditional fishing nets

Fishing as a way of life

In Chilia Veche, fishing has traditionally been both subsistence and livelihood. Knowledge is passed orally, from parent to child, shaped by observation rather than written instruction.

The river's rhythms dictate daily life: when to fish, where to cast nets, how to read the water. This knowledge cannot be taught in classrooms—it must be lived.

Boats of the Delta — the lotca

The traditional boat of the Danube Delta is the lotca, a narrow wooden vessel designed for shallow waters. Symmetrical in shape and often built by local craftsmen, the lotca allows silent movement through reeds and channels.

Propelled by oars or occasionally a small motor, these boats are extensions of the fisherman's body—responsive, stable, and essential.

Nets, gear, and techniques

Fishermen traditionally used gill nets, stationary traps, and seasonal techniques adapted to fish migration patterns. Fishing locations were known through experience rather than maps.

Each season brought different species to different channels. Winter fishing required breaking ice. Spring brought spawning runs. Summer meant long days on the water. Autumn prepared for the lean months ahead.

Fish species

Historically important species include carp, catfish, pike, pike-perch, and sturgeon. Sturgeon fishing, once central to the region's economy, is now prohibited due to conservation efforts.

The fish populations reflect the health of the Delta itself. Changes in species abundance or migration patterns signal broader environmental shifts.

Fish and food

Local cuisine reflects the river's abundance.

Soups, stews, and preserved fish form the backbone of traditional meals, often cooked outdoors and shared communally. The preparation methods—smoking, drying, salting—speak to centuries of adapting to seasonal rhythms.

Fish is not just sustenance. It is currency, gift, celebration, and memory. Every meal connects the present to generations past.
