Beluga Sturgeon

General Overview

**THE LARGEST FRESHWATER FISH IN EUROPE AND IN THE WORLD!** The beluga is a spectacular anadromous giant, a **LIVING FOSSIL** - 200 million years on Earth! Historical incredible dimensions: over 5 metres length, over 1,000 kg weight, age over 100 years! **CRITICALLY ENDANGERED (CR)** - populations in dramatic collapse! From 1939 (record: 1,144 tonnes of sturgeon captured in Romania) to almost ZERO today. **TOTAL PROHIBITION on fishing from 2006, extended 2016-2026!** Causes of decline: Danube Iron Gates dams (reproduction habitat fragmentation), ruthless poaching for caviar (most expensive in the world - "Beluga caviar"), pollution, habitat destruction. Anadromous: lives in the Black Sea, migrates in spring to the Danube for reproduction. Relatively small head, short conical snout, massive elongated thick body, 5 rows of bony longitudinal discs. **Rescue program**: LIFEBoat 4 Sturgeons - mass restocking with tagged fry, monitoring, living gene bank. **Romania - last EU country where sturgeons still reproduce naturally!** Without urgent intervention - **EXTINCTION within decades!**

Physical Characteristics

Giant: the largest freshwater fish! Historical typical dimensions: 2-4 metres, 200-500 kg. Historical maxima: 5-7 metres (exceptions 9 m!), 1,000-2,000 kg! Females larger than males. Massive, elongated, thick body. Relatively small head, short roughly conical snout. Large semi-lunar inferior mouth. Entire upper lip, interrupted lower lip in large middle space. 4 barbels. 5 longitudinal rows of bony (scute) discs: dorsal, 2 lateral, 2 ventral. Cartilaginous-bony skeleton. No scales. Coloration: dark grayish back, white abdomen.

Habitat & Distribution

Historical: Black Sea, Adriatic Sea (extinct!), Caspian Sea, Azov Sea. Anadromous: lives in sea (benthic), migrates to rivers for reproduction. From Black Sea migrated to: Danube (main!), Dnieper, Bug, Dniester, Don, Rion. In the Danube ascended very far upstream - to Germany, Austria, Slovakia before dams! Today: Danube Iron Gates I (1972) and II (1984) dams have completely blocked access to 80% of historical reproduction habitats! Sturgeons remain trapped downstream, cannot ascend. Reproduction only in the lower Danube sector. Ecological catastrophe!

Behavior & Diet

Specialist piscivorous carnivore: adults eat only fish! Fry: insect larvae, crustaceans, gradual transition to fish. Benthic in sea - stays on bottom. Spectacular anadromous migrations: spring (February-May) enters the Danube from the sea, ascends hundreds of km upstream, reaches reproduction sites (historically Iron Gates, now only downstream), reproduces, descends back to sea. Dam problem: after Danube Iron Gates I (1972) trapped sturgeons downstream led to maximum captures 1972-1976 (115.7 tonnes), then dramatic collapse: 1980-1984 only 37.3 tonnes, then continuous decline to zero! Extraordinary longevity: 100-118 years! Very late maturity: males 12-16 years, females 16-22 years (sometimes 25 years!). Does not reproduce every year - 2-4 year intervals!

Life Cycle & Reproduction

Extremely late maturity: males 12-16 years (1.5-2 m), females 16-22 years sometimes 25 years (2-2.5 m). Does NOT reproduce annually - 2-4 year intervals! Spring reproduction (March-June) in the Danube on rocky/sandy bottom with current. Anadromous migration from sea. Female deposits enormously many eggs: 300,000 - 7,700,000 eggs (!) - absolute sturgeon record! Large black eggs (3-4 mm) adhesive on stones. Beluga Caviar - the most expensive in the world! No parental care. Hatching after 8-15 days. Larvae drift downstream to sea. Growth extremely slow but continues throughout life. Longevity 100-118 years - among the most long-lived freshwater fish!

Conservation Status

Critically endangered - critically endangered - on the verge of extinction! Most endangered group of vertebrates: 23 of 27 sturgeon species worldwide in danger! Catastrophic collapse: 1939 Romania - 1,144 tonnes; 1978 USSR - 28,000 tonnes; 2020 Romania - almost zero! Total prohibition on fishing: 2006-2016 first period, extended 2016-2026 by Order 545/715/2016! Any capture, possession, trade illegal! Catastrophic threats: (1) Danube Iron Gates dams - block 80% reproduction habitats, (2) Ruthless poaching for Beluga caviar, (3) Excessive pollution, (4) Habitat destruction, (5) Illegal fishing. Rescue program: LIFEBoat 4 Sturgeons (WWF, Galati University, ARBDD): living gene bank, massive restocking with tagged fry, scientific monitoring, anti-poaching. Accidental captures - mandatory release, reporting! Romania - last EU country where sturgeons still reproduce naturally! Without urgent intervention - extinction within decades!
